Take A Look, We’re In A Book

It’s been kind of quiet around here, but since we kind of blew the lead in the title of the post, we’ll just get right to it: Oh Dier is in a book!

It’s called The Crafter’s Guide to Taking Great Photos, and it was written by the lovely Heidi Adnum. It’s already getting great reviews on Amazon, and it looks like this:

Heidi contacted us a while ago, asking us all kinds of questions about how we do what we do. We sent our responses, sent off some photos, and waited, fingers crossed that we’d make the cut.

Then we up and moved, built a new shop, took some new photos, made some new products…and one of our favorite pieces of mail we got in our new home was the book!

We were thrilled when Heidi contacted us, but even more thrilled to see the book in its final form. We were lucky enough to be one of nine crafters that were spotlighted in the book, so we got some really nice space (check out pages 130 and 131). It’s absolutely lovely, and we even learned a thing or two from other crafters who we highly respect.

Basically, if you have any questions at all about how Etsians or other online retailers create photo magic, it’s all here. Thanks, Heidi, for including us in your fabulous book!

That’s not the only newsy item, though. Our first jewelry box, the Pixie, has been born.

The top twists open to showcase your ring of choice. Comes in almost every color of the rainbow. Perfect for Valentine’s Day—you’ve got about a week, so get going! And we’ll pretty much guarantee she’ll say yes if you present a sparkler in this baby. Much better than than faux-suede box you get at the jewelry store. She’ll have it forever.

Man, Oh Dier is really feeling the love this February.

Happy Holidays from Oh Dier

It’s that time of year again! And, as independent artists we ask that you think about where you spend that almighty holiday dollar. We’d love to make you something special for your special someone (maybe that’s even you!) this holiday season. Take advantage of our 15% off sale this Black Friday evening through Cyber Monday and scoop up the sign we know you have sitting in your favorites folder. And all the people who will see the awesome sign, too! It’s a win-win-win-win-win!

XOXO from Oh Dier.

Living Room In a Backyard

Oh Dier, has William been scooping up the finds lately at the thrift shops! Since he works from home, he’s got a little more flexible schedule to check out thrift-store new arrivals, the lucky duck. He was so excited with all his goodies one day that he set them up in the backyard for me to see when I pulled in the driveway after work…it was like Christmas! Here’s a glimpse at some of the stuff outfitting our house these days.

Yup, that’d be a Lane coffee table. A magazine rack filled with “Not So Big House” books. A bar cart. And can you spot the dier?

Oh Dier! We’re Movin’ On Up: Entertaining Pieces

…to the West Side. By the end of next week, Oh Dier will have a new place to call home. A place built in 1954, which excites both of us, because we love midcentury modern design. This does not excite our bank account, though, so we are looking to furnish our home with great stuff without going hooves up and all.

We do get this question a lot: Where’d you find THAT? And we also get: Where can I go to find a _____? We also get the question-without-a-question-mark: I don’t even know where to start.

We’re not experts on everything, but we do love the thrill of the thrifty, vintage hunt, and we’re gonna show our finds to you, so you can see how we built our home, piece by lowish-priced piece. And show you that you can too!

Ready? OK.

Everyone is clamoring to get these rimmed glasses or barware, thanks to Mad Men (we don’t know whether we want to love Mad Men for acknowledging how cool this stuff is, or if we want to boycott them for ruining it for collectors). There are some rarer shapes and sets, and those can command a pretty penny, but if you want the look for less: Hit your thrift shops. We have found many sets. We managed to score this nifty decanter! Second thing—even if you can’t find a whole set, you can buy a few and build your collection over multiple trips. Trust us on this one. There’s a lot to go around.

Katie feels that no party is complete without some cheese. We got a beautiful cheese board for our wedding, but wanted a couple smaller complementary pieces that had domes. These have teak bottoms and were in great condition. Because Katie likes things in threes, it would be fun to find another one with another different dome on top. Keep your eyes out!

We found this fun warming platter at a St. Paul thrift shop. It probably wasn’t much of a supersteal, but we just loved its lines and pattern and thought it would be a cute entertaining/party piece. Katie lobbied hard to buy the matching divided bowl, but we both agreed that even at thrifting, we had spent quite a bit that day. We’re confident more of this pattern will pop up again.

We found these cordial glasses at a garage sale and fell in love. We tried to buy beautiful Czech glass cordial glasses and a decanter Brainerd this past spring but the shopowner broke it while checking us out, so we passed on that. These just feel really celebratory. (Yes, we take our cordials/digestifs seriously. They work!) Again, cool glassware for a pretty good price. We negotiated a deal with these and something else…you’ll have to tune in for the next installment to find out what!

What have been your favorite thrift/vintage/Craigslist/yard sale finds lately? Share and share alike!

New in the shop! Katie has an obsession with fancy paper, washi masking tape, and other ephemera, and then she hoards the paper goods because she finds it too fancy to use. Basically, she could open up her own paperie. So it was inevitable that William made this word into wood form. How fun would this be in your craft room, hanging over the piles of paper you can’t make yourself use? Just the encouragement we all need to make something pretty! $70. Etsy.

We love when we can get a glimpse of a well-designed interior—it’s so inspiring—and it’s exciting when said interior incorporates some of our artwork, because we love seeing where our signs land. We’re continually amazed at the wide variety of decorative styles and creative placements our clients come up with! (And we love sharing them with the rest of you, so expect this to be a semi-regular feature.)
We were extra thrilled earlier this month, when Brittni of papernstitch was kind enough to include us in an Etsy Get the Look: Décor feature! Her style jives oh-so-nicely with ours, and she was kind enough to let us feature her photo again here. Thanks, Brittni! You have impeccable style. (Don’t miss her blog too!)
Dear Readers: Please do send us photos of your home, and/or your sign, so we can feature your fabulous style!

Pretty exciting month over here!

Oh Dier was named best Etsy shop by Midwest Home Magazine—one of the first media outlets to ever cover William’s work when he first started out.

Here’s what the editors had to say:

"Woodworking started as a lark and a hands-on hobby for St. Paul native William Dohman. Soon his hands were full: His Etsy shop selling graphic prints, fine art photography, custom signs made of recycled wood, and eccentric block toys became wildly popular. Just how popular? Popular enough that Dohman established his own website, Oh Dier; quit his day job as an architectural designer at U + B Architecture in January to focus solely on the budding business; and recruited his wife Katie Dohman, style editor at Minnesota Monthly, as an occasional consultant. Popular enough that Oh Dier is running a contest to see which day the shop will hit 2,000 sales, a fantastically high number on Etsy. Go to Etsy.com/shop/WilliamDohman and see for yourself what all the buzz is about.”

Thank you so much, Midwest Home! We are thrilled and honored to be chosen, and included among such esteemed company.
